BLACK
AMERICA
IS…
An ongoing conversation that celebrates the formation of Black identity in the US.
ABOUT THE
PROJECT
Black America Is… is an ongoing documentary series that celebrates and examines the formation of Black identity in the United States. The project explores people from varied socioeconomic and demographic backgrounds, including all ages, genders, and sexual identities, who self-identify as Black to define and redefine what it means to be Black in America.
This project highlights the resilience and strength of Black Americans in defying stereotypes while celebrating the beauty of Black culture—our foodways, language, and invaluable contributions to humanity. From music and art to literature and activism, Black Americans are woven into the very fabric of this nation, shaping its values and spirit. Through this lens, we ask the ultimate question: is there a cohesive self-identity that Black Americans embrace today?
Our Story
Loria and Avril first met as film students at the Columbia University MFA Film program in 1997. As two of the eleven Black students, they bonded over their shared experiences, though opinions varied among their peers on what it was like to navigate the program. Upon graduation, they remained friends, often reflecting on their time at Columbia. In 2010, they set out to tell their story as Black students during an unprecedented moment in the school’s history. A few years later, Loria recognized the need to expand this exploration of the Black experience and envisioned a project documenting Black Americans across diverse fields, allowing them to define themselves beyond cultural constraints and stereotypes. She began filming subjects along the East Coast, capturing stories of individuals who not only broke new ground but also offered unique insights about the past and its relevance to the future. In 2020, Avril officially agreed to produce the project, and a creative collaboration was re-born.
